North Coast Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale

Thelonious Monk is a considered one of the giants of American music.  A revolutionary artist who, for more than twenty-six years, produced amazing jazz music. "Epistrophy," "Blue Monk" and "Straight, No Chaser."  Monk's music, particularly his improvisation, defied the conventions and norms of standard jazz.

Not only is Thelonoius Monk one of my favorite jazz musicians, but he is honored by one of my favorite Belgian Abbey Ales ... Brother Thelonious.  North Coast Brewing, which is located in Fort Bragg, California, brews this ale, which is in the style of a Belgian strong dark ale or a dubbel.

The beer pours a deep, dark brown.  The nose is sweet and somewhat malty, with a clear smell of the alcohol.  After all, the ABV of the beer is 9.3%, so this beer is definitely a sipping beer. The taste is very similar the smell ... somewhat sweet and malty.  And very, very good.

When you purchase Brother Thelonious, North Coast Brewing donates part of the proceeds to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.  The Institute provides college level training to young musicians, which is provided by jazz greats.  The Institute also supports jazz programs in high school around the world.

This is one of my favorite beers.  You can find it at Whole Foods for about $12.99 for a four pack of $9.99 for a 22 ounce bottle.
