Rogue Ales Double Mocha Porter

Rogue Ales is a craft brewer in Oregon that whose mission is, among other things, to produce the finest varietal ales.  In furtherance of that mission, Rogue Ales produces more than forty different beers.  Many of these beers are excellent, and, I count Rogue's Morimoto Imperial Pilsner and XS Imperial Pale Ale as some of my favorite beers.

I recently came across Rogue's Double Mocha Porter, which is one in a growing series of Double Rogues, following the Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale and the Rogue Double Chocolate Stout.  The Double Mocha Porter is brewed with ten ingredients.  These ingredients include C120, C150, Kiln Coffee, Black, Chocolate and Rogue's own micro barley farm malts, along with summit and micro hopyard Willamette hops.  Add pacman yeast and "free range coastal water," and you have all of the ingredients used to make what is a very good porter.

When you pour the beer, you get a dark, oily beer through which little to no light passes.  You also get a nice amount of off-white foam, that slowly dissipates, revealing much more of the beer.  The aromatic elements of the beer highlight the roasted nature of this beer, which is to be expected with the use of coffee, black and chocolate malts.  Those malts give hints of coffee and chocolate, although they are not overwhelming.

The taste of the beer is very good.  Although this beer is a "Double," it provides you with many more times the taste than an ordinary porter.  The beer provides an experience somewhat similar to that of a Russian Imperial Porter, with an ABV that rivals an imperial porter at 8.2%.

I would definitely recommend this beer if you like darker beers, especially porters and stouts other than Guinness.  You can find this beer at most beer and wine stores, as well as Whole Foods Markets.  It sells for about $12.99 for a 22 ounce bottle.

ENJOY!
